Shoplifting Prevention Program

The Shoplifting Prevention Program/ What it is

  • 8 self-guided sessions on the causes and effects of shoplifting,
  • Creates an opportunity for self-awareness and personal responsibility,
  • The focus on the the work is personal and goal oriented,
  • Requires complete honesty from participants to get to the root cause(s) of their crime,
  • Helps participants get connected with services they may not have otherwise known about
  • Works on managing impulse control,
  • Works on developing life skills that can be applied to day-to-day living,
  • Reduces the chance of reoffending.

How SPP benefits the community

  • RCMP officers are able to make a referral quickly, reducing their time spent on a file by four hours, and getting them back on the street in a timely fashion,
  • Saves money, time, and resources in our over-burdened court system,
  • Connects people to the resources in the community that are available to help,
  • Promotes Crime Prevention,
  • Lowers consumer costs.

A success story of SPP in their own words,

  • ….On the day that I was arrested for shoplifting, I was doing it so that I could go home, binge on what I had got, and then purge everything. I have had a long problem in my life with eating disorders, and this last April my bulimia was spiraling out of control. In a way being caught was a good thing for me, I might have never permanently changed my behavior, both shoplifting and eating disorder, if I was not caught and shown why I was wrong for partaking in such problematic behavior…….
