Stop Taking it Out on your Partner

STOP is a provincially recognized program that has been offered in Prince George for 20 years.  STOP offers free counselling for men who use violence or controlling behaviours (physical, psychological, and sexual) within their intimate partner relationship.  The program can support those with or without a criminal charges.  The program is seen as an independent, community focused, offender orientated, and a voluntary option.  Information is confidential and protected.

STOP consists of eight units, meeting once a week over the course of 15 weeks.  STOP includes group, individual, and couples counselling as well as peer support.  The program is designed to provide a number of techniques to address violence in relationships and personal growth, including :

  • Dealing with anger and identifying triggers,
  • The relationship between fear and anger,
  • Self-esteem,
  • Toxic shame,
  • Identifying the different types of self-talk,
  • Identifying the wide array of abusive behaviour,
  • Respectful and effective communication.
Referrals: Any adult can be referred or self-refer to the program.  The program is increasingly being accessed by a growing number of referral sources across the province including RCMP, MCFD, Community Corrections, Correctional Services Canada, Interior Health, treatment centers, law offices and many others.
