JHS Men’s Emergency Shelter
A 24 bed men’s emergency shelter providing accommodation, meals and support services to men 19 years and older who are homeless or transient. Support services include: on-site case managers to assist with personal planning, income assistance applications, communication with Probation officers and the court system, and all health and social services; direct access to the WorkFirst Employment Program counsellors and computer resource room; free laundry; and access to personal supplies (toiletries, clothing, footwear). Men seeking accommodation and support while they wait to enter treatment programs can usually be accommodated.
Gateway Support Services for Men and Women
A 25 bed, low-barrier, downtown emergency shelter with separate accommodations for men and women providing both accommodation and support services. Residents have access to all meals at the Upper Room Mission as well as in-house snacks and free laundry and toiletries. Case management support services are provided on-site and outreach workers from other local service agencies (Probation, income assistance, street nurse services, Mental Health services) meet with clients in the basement resource room. AA and other 12 step programs meet regularly at Gateway.
JHS Transitional Housing and Independent Living
Residents who have reached some stability in their lives but who still require some support services can access JHS Transitional housing beds (14 single occupancy rooms) or one of our independent living apartments (two 4-bedroom apartments).
WorkFirst Employment Program
Designed to meet the employment and training needs of men and women who are homeless, transient or have been in conflict with the justice system, WorkFirst provides employment counselling; access to our computer resource centre and in-house training; access to basic employment skills training (including computer basics, WHMIS, Food Safe and First Aid training); and an innovative and challenging career planning program, Implicit Career Search.
Homeless Outreach Program (HOP)
Connects men, women and families seeking affordable, safe housing with local landlords to build long term tenancy relationships. This program bridges the gap between homelessness and successful long term tenancy. HOP staff work with both the landlord and tenant to successfully resolve disputes and guide individuals to a better understanding of the basics of attaining and maintaining permanent housing.
Addictions Recovery Program
In partnership with the local Health Authority and the provincial government, our 9 bed Addictions Recovery Program provides a safe and supported environment for men seeking to address addiction. Our program takes a harm reduction approach, assisting each resident along the spectrum of addiction recovery.
